Recreational Pilot Permit

A Recreational Pilot Permit allows you to fly a single engine aircraft and to bring a passenger with you, in daylight hours. This is the quickest and least expensive way to get you flying. You can use the Recreational Permit to fly for business or pleasure, on short flights or long, any day anywhere in the country. Your Recreational Pilot Permit experience helps you build time towards the Private Pilot Licence. A recreational pilot may fly any single engine (up to four seats), land or seaplane, during day VFR conditions, in Canadian airspace, with a maximum of one passenger.

Requirements

You must be 16 years old to get the permit, and 14 years old to solo. You will need a minimum of 60% on the Transport Canada exam. You will also need at least a Category 4 medical.

You must have completed a minimum of 25 hours recreational pilot flight training under the direction and supervision of the holder of a flight instructor rating - aeroplane in aeroplanes operating with a Certificate of Airworthiness. The flight training shall include a minimum of 15 hours dual including a minimum of 2 hours cross-country flight time, and 5 hours solo flight time.

Skill

Privileges

The holder of a Recreational Pilot Permit – Aeroplane may act as:

•  Pilot-in-command of a single-engine aeroplane designed to carry a maximum of 4 passengers, with no more than one passenger carried on board, under Day VFR conditions in Canadian Airspace, and;

•  Pilot-in-command of an ultra-light aeroplane.
