Learn to Fly

Private Pilot License

Once you have your Private Licence, take your friends on a tour of the city. Here is what you will need to do to get your private pilot license.

Age

A minimum of 17 years of age. A minimum of 14 years for solo.

Medical Fitness

A valid Category 1 or 3 Medical Certificate.

Knowledge

You must complete a minimum of 40 hours private pilot aeroplane ground school instruction on the following subjects:

  • Canadian Aviation Regulations, Theory of Flight, Meteorology, Airframes/Engines/Systems, Flight Instruments, Radio Theory, Navigation, Flight Operations, Licensing and Human Factors, including pilot decision-making and
  • You must obtain a minimum of 60% in the written examination Private Pilot Licence - Aeroplane (PPAER).

Experience

You must have completed a minimum of 45 hours of flight time. A maximum 5 of the 45 hours may be conducted on an approved aeroplane simulator or flight-training device, including:

  • 17 hours minimum dual instruction flight time, 3 hours cross-country time and 5 hours of instrument time (3 hours may be instrument ground time)
  • 12 hours minimum solo flight time, 5 hours cross-country (a flight of a minimum of 150 nautical miles which shall include 2 full stop landings at points other than the point of departure).

Skill

An applicant shall successfully complete a flight test to the standard outlined in the TP 13723 - Flight Test Guide - Private Pilot Licence - Aeroplane.
